NICHCY's publications are all available here, for free, on our Web site. For your convenience, we offer them in text-only and PDF formats. (Help! What's PDF?)

What are you looking for? <Search Tips>

If you are searching for a phrase, put the phrase in quotation marks. Example: "learning disabilities"

We also provide copies in print upon request. Some have a small fee associated; most publications, we're pleased to say, are free.

Our publications cover the many topics related to children and youth with disabilities. To find a publication, you can search our collection by title or by series (described below), or you can search by topic, using this search box.

Catalog of Publications
We have publications catalogs in both English and Spanish. You can also print out our order form and send it in.

Basics for Parents
Do you have a question about the special education process? Try one of our Basics. They're short and easy to read.

Disability Information
Our fact sheets about specific disabilities will give you a brief overview of the disability and put you in touch with sources of more help. Our briefing papers offer longer and more detailed looks at disabilities such as ADHD and PDD.

Evidence for Education
Explore the best evidence-based practices education has to offer in these easy-to-read reviews of educational research relating to specific academic or behavioral interventions. You'll also find connections to more detailed resources to assist you in moving the research into practice.

General Information
Here's where you go for very basic information about disabilities and to learn more about the many disability organizations in the United States.

Grants Directories
NICHCY produces annual directories of the grants and contracts funded under Part D of IDEA, our nation's special education law. The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) at the U.S. Department of Education operates this discretionary grants funding program---want to know what projects they funded in Fiscal Year 2004? Come here!

IDEA-Related Publications
We offer a variety of publications on IDEA, the federal law that guides how early intervention and special education and related services are provided to infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities.

News Digests
Want to know more about what parents experience or can do to help their children? Need to know what the law requires of schools? Like to find out more about educating children with disabilities? The News Digest series takes an in-depth look at current disability issues.

Parent Guides
This series answers questions that parents commonly have when their child has a disability.

Posters
Our three mini-posters (two in English and one in Spanish) will brighten up any bulletin board with their rainbow of colors. They contain our contact information and let people know we're here to help.

Research Briefs
NICHCY's new Research Briefs are published to highlight findings of research and to promote the transfer of research into practice.

Resource Lists
Looking for a book, journal article, or video about a specific disability topic? Our resource lists are a good place to start your search!

Spanish Publications (publicaciones en español)
All of our core publications are available in Spanish, here online and in print.

Student Guides
Developed especially for older students with disabilities, these guides are actually a set of materials: a booklet for students, another for families and professionals, and an audiotape for everybody! In Set 1, learn about student involvement in the IEP process. In Set 2, take a closer look at jobs.

Transition Guides
NICHCY's Transition Summary series focuses on preparing youth with disabilities to move from high school to the adult world.

Out of Print
While these publications are no longer available in print from NICHCY, we continue to make them available on our Web site. They're dated, but the topics are still of interest to many people.

Interested in finding publications from other organizations? Search our Resource Library of the TA&D (Technical Assistance & Dissemination) network of projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS).

Acrobat PDF Help

The PDF format allows us to offer our publications on our Web site looking exactly like they do in print. If you want to read them here, or save them to your computer, though, you'll need the Adobe Acrobat Reader. You may already have this on your machine, or you may need to download it free from the Web. Click on the highlighted words above and learn how to obtain and install the Reader. It's easy! It's free!

To download documents:

  • If you use a PC, <right-click> on the link and save to your hard drive.
  • If you use a Mac, hover over the link until the menu pops up, then save to your hard drive.

Search Tips

Type your search term into the text box. If you are using a phrase, put the phrase in quotation marks(" "), as in "learning disabilities" or "attention deficit disorder."

To start another search, click "Clear Form" and type the new search term.

Additional Search Tips

To search for more than one term at a time, separate each term with a space. Consider the following example:

Autism PDD "Asperger Syndrome"

"Autism" and "PDD" will be searched individually, while "Asperger Syndrome" will be searched as a phrase.

Use a wild card for a broader search. Enclose the search term followed by an asterisk in quotation marks. The wild card "inclus*" will pull up records containing "inclusion," "inclusive," and any other terms that begin with "inclus."
